Well Rested: The Mask Matter Most

You’ve been told you snore and stop breathing in your sleep. You can barely get out of bed in the morning and drink two cups of coffee to get going. In the afternoon, you feel sluggish and you fall asleep in the evening before bed. These are all symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA is a very common condition where your throat closes off on you during your sleep, causing you to stop breathing. This results in very disturbed sleep, daytime sleepiness and even cardiovascular problems.
The gold standard treatment prescribed by Doctors and Nurse Practitioners for OSA is CPAP. This is a device that delivers air pressure to hold your throat open to its normal shape at night so that you can breathe properly.  It is delivered to your airway via a mask.
You may worry that sleeping with a CPAP machine will be very difficult. But the truth is, after the first few weeks of getting used, your quality of sleep and quality of life is much better.
But the one thing that decides the success and comfort of your CPAP treatment…the mask matters most.   Many CPAP clients could be using a better mask. In the past six months, some of the best CPAP masks ever have been put on the market. Some of the signs that you have the wrong mask include redness or chafing, air leakage, having to have your straps too tight, mouth dryness and headaches. If it has been six months since your last mask or you have any of the above symptoms, have you mask fit assessed by a respiratory therapist at a sleep clinic. Mask cushion and strap quality deteriorates very quickly and bacteria growth is exponential. Your mask needs to be replaced to maintain your best CPAP treatment and prevent sinus and chest infections.
Health insurance plans cover CPAP mask replacement throughout the year, so be sure to replace yours before the end of December!
